CABANA and your personal data

The CABANA consortium  is committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about what we do with it. Here we explain why we might collect personal data from you, what  personal data we collect, why we collect it, how it is processed, and how we keep it secure. You can tell us not to use your information in that way should you wish to do so.

What do we do with your personal data?

Anonymous browsing of the CABANA website

If you are browsing the CABANA website as an anonymous user, we collect aggregated user statistics using Google Analytics. Please see our privacy notice for more information. 

Our mailing list

If you subscribe to the mailing list, you have given us your consent to store your name (if provided), email address and subscription preferences securely in a database. We collect these data using a mailing-list management application called Mailman, and there is a separate privacy notice associated with the CABANA-all mailing list.

The data are password protected and accessible only to nominated EMBL-EBI employees.   We store your personal data only so that we can communicate with you and keep you up to date with news and information of relevance to the CABANA  project and the wider bioinformatics research community in Latin America, and so that you can share relevant information with other subscribers to the mailing list. 

You can unsubscribe from the mailing list at any time.

You can also make adjustments to your account via email by sending a message to with the word `help' in the subject or body (don't include the

quotes), and you will receive a message containing instructions on how to manage your account via email.

Normally, Mailman will remind you of your mailing list password once every month, although you can disable this if you prefer. This reminder will also include instructions on how to unsubscribe or change your account options. There is also a button on your options page that will email your current password to you.

The accuracy of your information is important to us. If you change your email address or believe any of the other information we hold concerning you is out of date, please update it.

Who controls your personal data?

On behalf of the CABANA project, the directors of the coordinating partner, EMBL-EBI, are responsible for the management of any personal data that we collect. 

How can you contact us?

As an individual, you have a right to update or amend the information we hold about you, to ask us to remove your personal information from our records and to obtain information from us, including a description of the data that we hold on you. For more information about this please contact CABANA’s Data Controller.

If you would like to complain about our handling of your data, please contact EMBL’s Data Protection Officer.

What is the lawful basis for processing your personal data?

We need your consent to process your personal data. By joining the mailing list you are providing us with this consent. If you do not consent to us processing your personal data, we will not be able to provide you access to the mailing list. 

Who has access to your personal data?

Your personal data are disclosed only to nominated members of EMBL-EBI staff. We will not normally disclose any personal information about users of the mailing list to third parties. Your personal data will not be be transferred to third countries (i.e. countries not part of EU/EAA) or other international organisations.
